It’s true.. according to Google Analytics my exit rate (… or bounce rate if you’re a techie) is 0.74%, and in this post I’m gonna tell you the 2 BIG secrets to this incredible exit rate.
This is something that I’ve done since day one so I’m pretty confident it has a lot to do with it. But before I do.. I know this doesn’t mean JACK to most people because they probably never heard about the thing in the first place.
So, I’ll take the time right now to explain what the heck a Bounce Rate is (..or exit rate if you’re a cool person) and why YOU should care.
“What Is It & Why Should You Care?”
I got this definition from the most trusted source of information – Wikipedia. OK, so it may not be the MOST trusted source online, but it had the definition so I used it. Here it is:
“It essentially represents the percentage of initial visitors to a site who “bounce” away to a different site, rather than continue on to other pages within the same site.”
So in other word, having an overall 0.74% bounce rate means that 99.26% of my visitors continue on to other pages within HectorJCuevas.com
“Ok.. I Care – What Are The 2 BIG Secrets?”
- SECRET #1 – We all know about the blog commenting strategy. We use it to build backlinks, and get almost instant traffic from high traffic sites. But one thing that I’ve done differently from virtually everyone that comments on my site is this..
I NEVER link to my Homepage – Ever!
The reason I don’t is because no matter what website we’re talking about, the HOMEPAGE is always the one with the highest bounce rate. Why this is the case – I’ll explain in another post with tips to lower ‘Homepage Exit Rates’, but for now just know that by linking deeper into your site, you lower your bounce rate dramatically.
- SECRET #2 – This one is a bit more obvious but sometimes overlooked. Pay Attention To Your Traffic Sources, here’s what I mean..
If your website is about Marketing, then generating traffic from submitting your link to random directories and forums in various topics will, as a results, give you RANDOM, non-targeted traffic. Non-targeted visitors will see your site and leave within the first 8 SECONDS.. - that’s how long it takes for the average visitor to decide if they want to stay or not.
So.. Here Are Your Action Steps:
- Don’t link to your homepage when commenting – Link to pages and posts within your site. (start by sharing your thoughts & leaving a comment on this post)
- Pay attention to where you’re getting your traffic – non-targeted traffic will bounce faster than you can SAY “bounce”

Hey Hector
What a great post, have learnt a lot from it, thanks,
One question for you bud, I see you have the plug-in below that shows my recent post, but like when you comment you have to put in your name, mail and website above.
Now would you put in the same link to your recent blog post in the website form above, or a different one from what your plug-in has detected?
Hope I made sense.
Thanks
Marc

Marc,
Thanks, I’m glad you learned a lot from it. You question did make sense, and yes you can put a different link from the one the plugin detects. However, the example I used was NOT the best example for this topic.. read below

Well Hector man, you are absolutely fantastic.. thank you for this!
Now tell me, where exactly do you check that bounce rate data?
Keep doing what you do, its awesome!
Hey Milena,
I see you already have a gmail account, all you need to do now is activate your google analytics account. Add your website, get a tracking code, and then come back to wordpress and add the “Google Analyticator” plugin.. this will show you all your stats on your dashboard, without having to go to google .

Hi Hector,
When I first started my blog I wondered what the bounce rate was. Mine was incredibly high, but has gradually dropped. (It’s always better when I post daily.)
I heard that linking to longer URL (other than your home page) can cause your comment to end up in the spam folder…? I’m trying it with this comment so we’ll see.
I’m going to give it a try and see if it starts making a difference.
Thanks!

Hey Susanna,
I’m glad I was able to clear that up for you, and I’m glad it’s gradually going down. But you’re right about the SPAM thing. Just goes to show you that we’re all learning from each other. I can’t imagine how many times I ended up in the SPAM folder on the blogs I comment on.
Thank you for sharing this valuable info..

Heh I heard somewhere that it is not a good strategy to leave a link to your homepage. But I totally forgot it!!! Thanks Hector for reminding me.

Hey John,
Linking to your homepage is not always the best thing to do because you’re giving your visitor TOO MANY things to pay attention and so tey end up leaving.

It is important to monitor your bounce rate. As you are developing your target market it starts to decrease. Keep up the great work that you are doing.

Hey Hector,
This is the first time I am visiting as your blog was recommended by josh. But I think that is a good insight on how to drop your bounce rate. As people visiting your home page won’t find anything to munch on so the chances are they would so it is much better to put a link of a page or an article rather than just a home page. Thanks Hector I would come here again:)
Hey Yadvinder,
Thanks for stopping by and welcome. Yes, you got it.. you need to give them “something to munch on” – well said.

.-= Brian Tomlinson´s last blog ..Blogging – Finding Your Passion in Writing =-.
Hey Brian,
I would recommend linking to your best article or video post, because when they visit and they like it… they’ll move on to see if you other great stuff like the one they just read. The goal is to get the visitor to browse your site because they’ll be more likely to opt-in or take another desired action.
If they don’t do anything like that, it’s OK – the mere fact that they took the time to look around increases the chances of them coming back.
Hope that helped..

Hi Hector,
Thanks for sharing your wisdom! I had no idea what “bounce rate” meant. Mine is quite high actually. But then, most of the time I link to my home page when leaving a comment.
I was just thinking about what Susanna said…. I wonder, if long urls would still end up in the spam folder on blogs where you have to fill in a CAPTCHA before you can post your comment. It would be worth a try.
Have an awesome day!

Hi Hector,
It indeed will land in the spam folder. I tried it on Josh Garcia’s blog and he had to dig me out of his spam. So, conclusion ….
Not a good idea to use long urls in comments!!

Absolutely agree with Secret #1! As soon as I started adding my blog URL or individual posts in comments (definitely post if it helps continue the conversation), I noticed an increase in the “time on site” metric too
