The 3 Major Factors To Fast Blog Growth [See My Traffic Stats...]

fast-blog-growth-2“You’re growing everyday – you just don’t see it yet…”

You’ve heard this before, right? From our parents when we were growing up. We wanted to get big so fast, so we could do the things we weren’t allowed to do. (like stay up passed 9)

But, just like any kid growing up, we didn’t believe it. It didn’t make any sense because we couldn’t see it, or feel it.

Well, the point of this post is to tell you that:

You Really ARE Growing Everyday – You Just Don’t See It Yet..

I read a guest post by Srinivas on Jean’s blog yesterday that really got me thinking. It was about creating quarterly reports to track your blog’s growth. Not only did he break down how he does it, he also mentioned something really interesting.

He said that there’s no reason to look at your traffic stats in the first 3 months of blogging because you still don’t have enough information to determine anything, yet.

…and he’s right! But, it’s hard…

I find myself looking at my stats 2 to 4 times a day and it kills me. It kills my productivity. The reason I bring that up is because I know most you do it, too (..c’mon, be honest) - But why?

Because we’re obsessed with quick, fast, and instant stuff. I mean, look at Google. Instant Search?? – as if it wasn’t fast enough before…

And here’s the problem. When we constantly look at our stats, and DON’T see the growth, we get discouraged. We start saying to ourselves that, “this ain’t working”, and that’s not the path we want to go down on.

Here’s What We Don’t See…

too-fast-blog-growthBecause of our obsession and hunger for instant gratification, we don’t see what’s really happening. The only thing that we feel is the daily struggle of trying to grow our blog and our audience.

Here’s what we see:

This is a picture of my daily blog stats. As you can see it’s a struggle. Up some days. Then it goes down the next. It’s constantly fluctuating. It’s important to know that this daily struggle is what’s SUPPOSE to happen.

Rarely do you see a day-to-day upward slope.

daily-blog-growth

Here’s what we should pay attention to:

This is a picture of my blog’s growth over the past 3 months. THIS is what matters. This is how I know I’m growing and I encourage you pay attention to these stats rather than the former.

monthly-blog-growth

Now, if you notice that you’re NOT growing month-to-month, here are 3 major factors that I’ve been focusing on in the past 2 months that might help you out.

The 3 Major Factors To Fast Blog Growth

Blog-growth-fast#1. Deeper Content, Less Posts - Back in April when I first started this blog, I was writing a lot of really short posts – EVERYDAY. That was good because I was getting visitors everyday coming to the blog and reading my articles.

But it wore me out.. So I started writing less posts per week, but I went much more deeper into the topics.

These really long posts are what I think, made all the difference. Dave and Glen both follow this content strategy, so I tried it out and IT WORKS!

Here are some of those deeper and longer posts I’ve written recently:

If you’re doing fine with your content strategy, and you can churn out content 5 days a week – then, by all means, continue what you’re doing and keep rocking. But for the rest of us, NON-SUPER human beings, we should focus on depth.

#2. Consistency Is Still Key - Regardless of how much less I post, I still need to stay consistent with this content strategy, and you should too. Inconsistency won’t kill your blog, but if will kill the blogger. (..that means YOU)

If you go one day without posting, you will find it a lot easier NOT to post content on a regular basis. This is gonna lead you on a downward spiral that is hard to get out of (trust me).

Staying consistent is good for your audience because when they visit, they’re looking for new stuff from you, but it’s much more important to stay consistent for yourself.

#3. Your Blogging Network – This is something I’ve been focused on for over a month now because I realized that having a network of bloggers can help me grow a lot faster. You should start creating relationships with strategic partners as soon as you can.

I don’t have much to report yet, but I’ve been mentioned in a couple blogs and I’ve seen the direct affect that being mentioned can do to my growth.

I don’t think there will ever be a perfect guide to creating relationships online, but you should start by simply talking to people, linking to them and getting to know them without any hidden agenda.

(..that’s what I’ll be doing)

Question.. As Far As Growing Your Blog, What’s Working For You?

Share some strategies that have worked for you in the comments section below, so we can all benefit fro our experiences. Or pose a question and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Please share this post with your friends on facebook and twitter, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks..

P.S – It’s my birthday this Sunday (oct.3rd) and I wanted to do something really cool for you guys. So keep a look out for Monday’s post. I think you’ll enjoy it, and I’m sure we’ll learn something new.  :0)

  3. Hey Hector,

I like how you mentioned don’t look at the daily growth. Focus on the monthly growth or quarterly. At the beginning, most individuals are still trying to find their target audience. This is challenging for most.

Then, they are trying to figure out a strategy for content creation. If they follow what you just outlined and stay steady. The blog will grow over time. Great job!

If I don’t chat with you before Sunday, enjoy your birthday!

I’ve had a remarkably similar experience. First I was on a content tear, then I pulled back to posting 3 times a week, then I developed a large network of bloggers with the intent of helping them by adding value to their blogs, networks, etc. The day to day fluctuations used to drive me nuts but by letting go the obsession with myself and moving my attention to creating awesome content and helping promote others I’ve seen a steady rise in traffic.

Thanks for sharing your insight and have a great weekend :)

Awesome post Hector! Consistency is the key, if you really want to acheive big in your blogging journey you need to be consistent. Its always good for a blogger to know the type of posts strategy that works for him or her! Thanks for sharing it helps big time. Take care.

  7. Great inspiration Hector!

I know it’s hard not to look at those daily stats, and I do it too – but you’re right, it’s the slow progression upward that you want, the monthly stats are so much more meaningful. This stuff takes time to build sometimes and people can get very discouraged!

I too noticed that if I just focused on packing good content into more focused posts, they had much more potential to be syndicated and get comments.

Thanks for putting this out there!

And, Happy Birthday Sunday if I don’t get back with you by then!

Great point about not looking at your daily stats. I started my blog about two months ago and so far traffic is slow but steady. I did not expect a quick growth and have got visitors from all over the world. Most of my blogs are also articles that I posted on EzineArticles which is driving most of my visitors.

Thanks again for your great advice and super content. My next step is to get connected with other bloggers and post some guest posts – any suggestions? My offline business is leadership & business coaching that I would like to expand to online.

Larry Scarbeau´s last post ..You Can Re-invent Yourself!

    • Larry.. the first step would be to start visiting the sites your potential clients would visit. Then, if the readership is good (you can tell by how many comments they received – or the alexa ranking) you check if they take guest posts.

Look around to see what others have written so you don’t say the SAME thing, and pitch the article. If they don’t take it, go to the next one.

Guest blogging is great – good luck

    Hi Hector,

Great post! Ever since I read on your blog about WordPress Stats I’ve been watching mine on a daily basis. Don’t think that’s a good thing. It’s like if you watch the water in your pot and wait for it to boil ;-)

So, I’m going to take your advice and wait until I’m 3 months in and then take a look at my stats again.

    Happy early Birthday!

  10. Excellent post Hector. You have to blog on a daily basis because if you do not people are going to wander off. You must come up with new ideas and look at what other people want to know. For instance if you need help writing a single blog do yourself a favor and go to ezine articles and go to the Top Ten Authors in a Home Based Business. Then write each sentence by sentence and put into the keyword research the main word that gets the most traffic and put it into google sets to come up with the words that google wants. Then add those words into the article and every sentence that you write you then ask yourself the question so what? If it does not make sense that sentence then just remove it.

  12. Rasheed says:

Thanks for the tips Hector, and happy birthday!

It usually takes me an hour to write a good blog post, but this is because every day I look for things to blog about, and I think constantly. I have a one hour commute to school so I use this time to think.

I do believe that quality beats quantity. So sometimes I’d skip a day of blogging, but because I have an unfinished product. I try to blog daily, with deep posts that I think about usually for hours, but if I can’t write a deep post, I’ll write it the next day.

But some people, even myself, think they have a quality post, and therefore sacrifice quantity. I believe it’s important to have both, but to focus more on the quality rather than quantity. If you could have the same calibre of quality but with greater quantity, DO IT. It will help you and your blog immensely. I found that when I used my “quality” excuse to write fewer posts, I lost MANY visitors to my site, because my fewer posts were of the same quality as before.

Note that I’m not ordering anyone to do anything, but using the general “you.”

Thanks again for this great post! I’ll employ them for sure!

    • Rasheed… planning takes me a long time too – especially when you want to really deliver value with each post. I think and hour of thinking is great.

You definitely have to find a balance between quality and quantity. Some say, don’t post unless you have nothing to say – but what if you never have anything to say.. that’s not good neither, right?

It takes work, but no one said this was easy :0)

Besides from that doing “volume blogging” is far more stressful, the reward of creating in-depth quality content pays off more in so many ways.

The feeling of leaving a quality piece of content behind is very nice, especially knowing that it can generate income for quite a long time ahead.

This type of content is what most people don’t take the time or put in the effort in to write.

Good stuff Hector, I believe that when you start blogging you should write articles everyday for about 3 months, so when someone visits your blog it has a lot of useful information. After 3 months you should write 3 time a week, and focus on networking for another 3 months after that you should focus on guest post. Now you have a lot of content people know you and your posts are featured on other blogs. Thats how you make it in blogging.

Really good post! I too have noticed how day-to-day stats can be misleading. If we look at weeks or months we can more easily see long-term trends (which should be the real measure of our progress).

I also check my stats WAY too often, and it does inhibit my productivity. One moment I am in the middling of writing a post or answering an e-mail and the very next I want to open my stats tab and click “refresh.” It can be frustrating, but this is a learning process right?

    Happy birthday, Hector!

I agree that it’s hard to keep up post frequency when you’re posting every day. I like how you suggest to reduce post frequency and increase the quality and length of your posts. I’ve been experimenting with the post frequency on my blog, and I’ve found that it’s less stressful to post 3-4 times a week and maintain quality. My posts are generally on the long end, so I’ve found that any more than 4 times a week becomes a struggle, as I also have other tasks and commitments that need to get done during the week.

Relationships with other bloggers are also important. By getting to know those around you, you’re building friendships and creating opportunities. I believe commenting should be the first step, since you’re letting the blogger know that you value the blog and its content. You should read blogs that you enjoy on a regular basis, then start reaching out to the bloggers who you admire. I’ve found that this method works well, and I’m enjoying my journey as a blogger a lot more, since I feel part of a community by contributing.

By the way, your suggestion to only analyze stats based off of the last three months is ingenious! It makes a lot more sense, and now I’m not so obsessed with checking stats every day and getting discouraged if I don’t see improvement right away.

I agree on all of the points you have covered there mate. It is especially true that when you start checking your stats hourly, the chances are that you will get disappointed. After all seeing a huge jump in traffic for such a short period is totally impossible. And still I was thinking of quitting a few times, because of that. It was long ago though and hopefully won’t happen again.

The content paragraph is very true as well. Quality goes over quantity and posting daily just for the sake of posting is not going to work. It is better to spend a week refining your article than posting it in a rush, just because you haven’t posted in a very long time.
