How To Record & Edit Audio Using Free Software (for the ‘non-techie’)

mic300Maybe you want to start a podcast to increase your online reach or maybe you just want to offer your blog readers something other than written blog posts.

Either way, I want to show you everything you need to know about recording and editing audio using free software and how to embed it on your own blog. This is going to be a meaty post, (with videos and everything) so if you don’t have time to go through it now, be sure to bookmark it for later.

Here’s what we’ll be covering:

1. The Tools You’ll Need

2. How To Record & Edit Audio (Video 1)

3. How To Export as MP3 & Play Audio On Your Blog Post (Video 2)

Let’s get started.

You Don’t Need Much To Start Recording

recording-setupReally. You don’t.

You don’t need two 24 inch monitors, a 1000 watt surround sound system or $350 audio recording software to start recording good quality audio; I just like having lots of cool stuff. :0) Here’s what you DO need, though:

1. Audacity (free) -

2. USB Condenser Microphone ($80 – $100) -
Click here to buy one at Amazon.com

3. 6 Inch Pop Filter ($15 – $20) -
Click here to get one at Amazon.com

You could even get started with a regular USB headset microphone, but your sound quality won’t be as good. If audio or video podcasting is going to be a big part of your marketing and business strategy then I suggest investing in equipment that will ‘WOW’ your listeners and viewers.

Now, let’s move on to the video tutorials. The first will cover how to download audacity, how to record audio using audacity and how to edit that audio.

Start Recording Your Awesome Voice

The second video covers how to export the audio clip as MP3, where to download the LAME MP3 Encoder and how to embed your brand new audio MP3 in a blog post.

Enjoy!

Link To Your Latest Audio Content…

I thinks audio content is great because I can take the MP3 files wherever I go, and listen to them “on-the-go”. I’m always looking to see who’s putting out awesome audio content that I can listen to. If you have a podcast or put out audio content regularly, feel free to leave a link to your latest episode in the comments section below. I would love to check out what you have.

You never know; you might gain some new listeners! If you have any questions, I’ll be answering those, too.

Wow, I didn’t realize it was so straightforward to include audio podcast to your blog :) Great stuff!

So, is the same equipment (microphones, pop-filter) good for producing the videos too or is this just audio specific? Are you using these same ones when creating your videos as well?

    • Yep.. simple stuff right?

Yea, I create those videos using Camtasia and the same USB microphone and pop filter. I really don’t like how the sound quality ends up when recording through Camtasia; but I have no other choice. :/

Hope you got some value out of that

      • Timo says:

        Sure!

I already started thinking how I could incorporate audio content to my blog :)

But, I haven’t forgotten bro. I’ll definitely hit you up.

  4. Hi Hector!

I love audacity. I have been using it since about ’07 or so to recoed and edit audio trainings for my team. I love that it will allow mr to combine audio files, add music to the beginning and ending of something, fade in and out, etc. And all for free!

Great tutorial. Ironically I have a very similar post in draft form on my blog, waiting for a video. Lol I am going to have to figure out how to mix it up a bit. :)

I use wp-audio plugin for embedding audio on my blog. It automaticallt turns my .mp3 lonks into a player, but it can be tweaked to allow download or not. I like how your plugin allows you to tweak the colors. I will have to try it.

    Great tutorial!

  12. Hector,

I was playing with my new iPhone and I checked out the business blogging section and you came up as the third item. That’s freakin’ impressive considering how much content there is on iTunes. I’m following your lead and I’m going to do more podcasting, while incorporating audio, video and pdf forms for my followers. We should hook up and collaborate.

    Hi Hector,
Thanks for sharing with us how to create our very own podcast! However, I think it’s usually for those who can speak out their minds easily and everyone can easily understand their drift. There are some people I know who can write great stuff but cannot express themselves verbally, especially when their native language isn’t English.
    Thanks!

    • That’s a great point Felicia. We all have different strengths. Some people are great on video, others can write their butts off, while others can get on a podcast and go on forever.

We just have to find what works best for us, and what feels comfortable and go with it.

thanks for the thought provoking comment
