  1. Very good point Hector. There are some things that just cannot be automated..and are so important to branding and leadership. Posting blog comments is one of those things. Thanks for putting it out there.

      Thanks Deborah..

Yes, I agree that it’s one of those things you can’t “outsource” or “automate” – If you’re gonna do it.. might as well do it right.. your brand can really suffer if you don’t.

    Hector,

I love being the first one to comment on a fresh new blog post… It’s like getting a piece of real estate on their blog.

… then after commenting, you syndicate the crap out of it! ;)

I like the top commentator plug in… but I don’t think it works if you have the Disqus commenting system installed.

    Thanks for the Great tips!

      Yo,

Same here, being the first one to comment is a great traffic strategy – as you can probably tell with the number of comments this post has Deborah is getting quite a bit of traffic from this very post.

But you made a great point.. what’s the point of commenting first if nobody comes to read the post – syndicating the article will make sure the author gets readers and you get clicks.. it’s a win-win. – I think I’m gonna make a post about that :-)

I don’t know much about the disqus system – So I wouldn’t know.

No problem.. thanks for sharing your thoughts..

  23. Hector you may want to look at your top commentator’s plugin, since there is a field in there that allows you to exclude your own login IDs from the list. There’s a bunch of other optional fields too. A lot of people, myself included do not run it (or most of my widgets even) on ever page. Sidebar space is at such a premium that I enjoy the diversity. I run TC on my home page (and set it to re-calculate on 60 days so that newer commentators have a chance of getting into the list). When a TC list does not display number of comments, I often do not spend the time commenting on a bunch of posts on the same blog trying to get into the TC rank because I don’t know if the target is even sanely attainable I’ve seen blogs where the TC was in excess of 50 comments. Even a blog like Katie’s that has only been around 12 months, requires 29 comments today to break into the TC. (Although in Katies favor her blog is a PR5 and thats a worthwhile task!)

Great training video on the power of commenting!
.-= Kimberly Castleberry´s last blog ..Social Media Metrics, Measuring Your Impact for Maximum ROI =-.

    • Hector Cuevas says:

      Hey Kimberly,

I followed your suggestion and took my name out the TC widget (didn’t know I could do that). As far as making the comments re-calculate, I actually wanna keep the names of the people who were with me from day one.. maybe I’ll add a few to the list down the road.

..and I’m a bit weary about adding the comment count because I fear people would then just comment to get on the list and not contribute to the convo..

Thanks for your well throughout comment & suggestions

      Enjoy your week
      Hector

  24. Hi Hector,
I agree with you and I am commenting about twice as much in the last week. Thanks for your 2 posts today.

  27. Hi Hector – I’m so glad you did this video. You’re so right that leaving comments is a great way to help with branding and backlinks.

Here is a quick story (and I’m sure this happens all the time). I recently left a comment that was value-driven on the blog of another marketing coach who serves the same target market as me. My comment added my perspective with regard to finding and attracting your ideal niche, because this is my focus. That comment was read by someone who subscribed to my list and then hired me as her coach.

So my lessons learned from this are: 1. Be sure to follow the top people that work with the same target market as you, and leave comments on their blogs where appropriate. 2. Try to add value in your comments and reinforce the value that you personally provide. Thanks and warm wishes,

  28. Well Hector I just had to comment on this one. My latest post is along the same lines and I think I have gotten less comments than usual lol. We all suffer when people don’t leave comments on any blog. There are so many points of views about a subject that could be shared, discussed or debate but that point of view has to be seen to get us thinking and how? Through commenting. Aside from like you mentioned the numerous branding advantages it’s common courtesy as well I scratch your back you scratch mine. Leave me a link to your new tribe please. Thanks for all you do.
